Forensic Scientist II: Validation-QC Unit, Quality Management Section
The successful candidate will perform DNA analysis on a wide range of complex samples in support of the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL) in Dover, DE. The Forensic Scientist II (FS1) will be responsible for performing analysis of forensic evidence in accordance with laboratory accreditation and standard operating procedures. The FS2 is critical to the successful laboratory operation and will be required to work collaboratively and productively with laboratory staff and management. The ability to prioritize job responsibilities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a focus on excellent customer service is a must.
Responsibilities may include:
• Perform duties at the direction of the Quality Manager or Validation-QC Manager, Quality Management Section.
• Establish a quality control module within the Laboratory Information Systems Application (LISA).
• Generate, analyze, interpret technical data, and produce technical reports using PCR based methods (mtDNA sequencing and STR analysis) for laboratory quality control and validation functions.
• Generate, analyze, interpret technical data, and produce technical reports using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methods.
• Perform quality control testing of critical reagents and laboratory instrumentation.
• Assisting in quality assurance activities (e.g. standards maintenance, equipment preventive maintenance, reagent testing & validation, proficiency testing, and accreditation and certification).
• Give lectures and participate in courses, symposia, workshops, and conferences on matters relating to DNA typing, forensic science and validation projects.
• Provide training in laboratory techniques and procedures to technical staff, students and guests of the laboratory.
• Performing general laboratory housekeeping activities by maintaining appropriate working-stock levels of expendable supplies and a clean environment within laboratory work areas.
• Assisting program maintenance and development at the direction of their designated supervisor.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
• Master’s degree in forensic science or one of the natural sciences - OR two years of relevant DNA experience with a bachelor’s degree in forensic science or one of the natural sciences.
• Minimum of twelve cumulative semester hours or equivalent that covers the required subject areas in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Statistics.
• Experience in Forensic DNA typing & NGS Sequencing; specifically in auSTR, Y-STR, or mtDNA analysis.
• Successfully complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NAC-I) background investigation. The position does not require a security clearance, but the individual may be required to obtain a government security clearance at a future date if handling classified information or materials.
• Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
• Must be self-motivated, detail oriented, and able to work well in a team laboratory environment.
